Hardcore Characters are a mechanic of Opt-in Permadeath, allowing the Player to risk losing their character for the thrill of risk and bragging rights, and some benefits, such as hastened leveling.

A Grim Forewarning - also known as - Do Not Make Your First Character Hardcore, or Risk Frustration, Doom and Grief!

The Multiverse is a very dangerous place, and death is always near. From the dangers of the Inner Planes' natural hazards of the elements - a sweeping gale, a thundering storm, a swirl of lava - to the extreme dangers of belief-made-real of the Outer Planes, there is a great risk of death at any moment. Fortunately for most Planeswalkers, revival magic, healing and all sorts of effects can save one from death... And if anything goes truly wrong, a Planeswalker can always escape somehow. Now, that's not the same for Hardcore Characters.

Hardcore Characters require a great deal of in-game knowledge of mechanics, the server itself, gear and equipment, classes, and so forth. You are allowed to, but we highly suggest that you do not make a Hardcore Character if you are a newbie to SPL; you risk losing your character, often for things you'd never think of killing you. You will also find participating in DM run events difficult due to the constant self-inflicted risk of Permadeath.
To opt into Hardcore, you must do so when you create your character, at the Creation Area, by speaking with the Gatekeeper.

To understand Hardcore Characters, one must first examine what a regular Planeswalker can do:

Regular Planeswalkers

* Can revive after mechanically dying (Respawn option), representing them escaping from death and danger, somehow.
* Can be revived with revival spells theoretically an unlimited number of times.
* Has a limited Combat XP cap that refreshes daily.

Hardcore Planeswalkers

* Permanently dies after not being quickly revived by another Planeswalker.
** When a character is brought to below 0 HP, they will be unable to respawn and a 2 minute timer will start.
* The player must be brought back to life and must remain above 0 HP during those two minutes or the PC will be retired automatically.
** This is to prevent inappropriate revival spamming.
* Has unlimited XP caps, up until level 20.
* Places traditionally safer to die in (such as Ysgard or the Spire) are not safe for Hardcore Characters until level 20.

Escaping the Clutches of Hardcore Danger

A Hardcore Planeswalker can, in fact, stop being Hardcore.

To do so, the Hardcore Character has to use a Manual of Retraining, that costs 200 writ points. Writ points are gained from doing writs. Using the Manual of Retraining removes the Hardcore Character 's Hardcore status, ensuring the PC can safely Respawn.
