Common Knowledge

Appearance

Emma is slight of build, possessing little visible muscle, and stands about 5'6" tall. Her eyes are blue-grey, and her hair is straight and a dull brown in hue, cut in a slightly messy bob. She wears a dreary selection of plain, modest clothes in muted shades of grey and brown- often under an outer robe of the hue one might get by staining fabric with blood. (Though she typically keeps herself fairly clean.) She is a woman who, under the right lighting, would be quite attractive. In fact, several subtle traces of her lineage- most notably a slender, spade-tipped prehensile tail- could conceivably allow her to be mistaken for a succubus, rather than merely one's descendant. Observed for long under normal lighting conditions, however, the illusion is broken. Her skin, while mostly clear and smooth, is a pale, sickly green, slightly cool to the touch- and she has a haunted countenance, with faint circles under eyes that seem focused elsewhere. She sometimes relies on a claw-topped staff to keep herself upright, and lately she is seen to tremble and cough at times, or to look momentarily lost.

  • Both of her palms have been marked by magic; Her right is branded with the image of a seven-pointed sun, her left marred by a vaguely star-shaped burn scar. The brand has a roughly c-shaped scar around it, as though someone had tried to cut out the patch of skin on which it resides.
  • Her right ear is slightly discolored, appearing more of a seafoam green, compared to her overall slightly more sickly coloration.
  • [Usually hidden under clothing] She has a tattoo of a cluster of three pink sakura blossoms on her chest, on the left side, above her heart. She has a seafoam green scar across her stomach from a sword slash, and another just under her ribs, with accompanying exit wound in her back, from being stabbed.
  • [Knowledge: The Planes DC 30] Most of her skin, save that on her neck and head, and that on her forearms, hands, shins and feet is covered in tattoos and markings primarily of Tanar'ric design and language, the vast majority of these markings having names worked into them, a few recognizable as belonging to some noteworthy (if obscure) figures in the Abyss.

Personality

<<WORK IN PROGRESS>>

Emma is almost always nervous, and regularly demonstrates a hesitance to interact with other people. She clearly wants to, but her own anxiety frequently holds her back. She tends to settle at first for the middle ground of being silent but present for discussions, so addressing her directly often startles her slightly- but it also gives her the needed 'push' to involve herself. When she speaks, it is generally quiet and punctuated with pauses and stammering, and she seems to frequently have difficulty selecting the right words to convey precisely what she means. She also spends perhaps an undue degree of focus on attempts to avoid upsetting others, which has occasionally led to her switching between conflicting ideas mid-sentence as she tries to work out the most diplomatic thing to say.

When discussing magical theories and formulae, however, she tends to become engrossed in the ideas, and her anxiety takes a backseat to scholarly fascination. When she recognizes someone as being a spellcaster of any variety, the idea that they share common interests is often sufficient to suppress her anxiety enough for her to eventually initiate a conversation.

Rumors

  • She used to be a namer in the Anarchs, but they kicked her out.
  • She's attempting to turn herself into a demon as a means of attaining immortality.
  • She's actually a demonic puppet. The real Emma is trapped in Aldinach's Egg.
  • She's always been a demon; She just comes to Sigil for the purpose of spreading misery.
  • Recently, she's started having secret meetings with influential figures in the Outlands.
  • She was never kicked out of the Anarchs; She's spying for them.
  • She's actually a spy for the Order of the Planes Militant.

Relations

<<WORK IN PROGRESS>>

  • Aitou - Following the battle for Cadarn Edryd, Emma and Aitou met, and found each other well suited to helping one another through their respective troubles. Not long after, their relationship became one of a romantic nature. At some point, Emma's enthusiasm for the philosophy of the Sensates must have rubbed off on her, because she joined up not all that long after Emma did.
  • Aria - She's known Aria for a long time; They first met not long after Emma's arrival in Sigil, in fact. She considers Aria one of her closest, dearest friends. Lately, however, they've grown less close- though Emma regularly demonstrates dissatisfaction with this fact.
  • Cassidy MacKenna - Emma sees her as a friend. She's known Cass and Erin for about the same length of time, and seems about as fond of one as of the other, but around Cass she is perhaps slightly less awkward. Emma supposedly joined the Guardians through the two of them.
  • Eileltheyll - She's interesting and easy to get along with, so Emma has quickly come to consider her a good friend. Not only that, she's a Sensate too!
  • Eruca Ad Papilionem - For whatever reason, Emma trusts Eruca, very obviously considering her a very dear friend, akin to a sister. Why is uncertain, especially considering the treatment she's occasionally received at Eruca's hands.
  • Nairna Yousei - She gets along well with the half-fey, chats with her generally taking on a distinctly positive tone.
  • Niki Abraxas - Emma seems to greatly enjoy talking with her, clearly taking great pleasure in having someone with whom she can have unfiltered discussions on the subject of magic without having to worry about being judged.
  • Alec - She seems fond of the Bleaker, and has often sought him out for advice, evidently having great respect for his opinion. Recently, however, her interactions with him have been awkward and brief due to guilt over some betrayal of his trust.
  • Alinda Lasaedra Veles - Emma was in a romantic relationship with Alinda for a time, but their relationship was apparently unable to survive the strict rules that Emma was required to adhere to as a member of the Order of the Planes Militant.
  • Eidothea - Emma first met her some time ago, but was too preoccupied with her own troubles to get to know her, until after she'd joined the Order of the Planes Militant. Emma is quite fond of her, but the feeling doesn't appear to be mutual, based on Emma's usual mood after their few conversations.
  • Face - It isn't clear what Emma thinks of Face, but she's usually fairly polite in her dealings with her, occasionally finding their conversations quite enjoyable.
  • Garrak Ilosi Varaq'Bu - Emma's attitude towards Garrak is unclear. She quite obviously doesn't trust him, and doesn't really seem to consider him a friend, but enjoys his company, and has supposedly given him medical and magical aid in the past.
  • Hafsa Sarah Shadiya Tabassum Alfarsi - She seems to consider the djinn a friendly acquaintance, or possibly a friend, but she also seems at times to find her either frustrating or somewhat amusing- the former being more common, typically stemming from her distaste for being treated like a child just because she's mortal.
  • Jocelyn Emmarask - She doesn't really know Jocelyn at all, by all accounts, but she supposedly bought back his lighthouse once after he'd lost it in a tournament of sorts.
  • Seluil - Emma seems a little awkward around him, but she appears to like him well enough, having spent more time around him lately. There is, however, a lingering trace of distrust that doesn't seem likely to go away completely.
  • Shalira Vercci - Shalira is Emma's senior in the Society of Sensation, and the member who recruited her. She's also a mage of no small talent, which makes her worth knowing, in Emma's book.
  • Sorlla Tamera - Emma had, since not long after her expulsion from the Order of the Planes Militant, been in a romantic relationship with Sorlla. At some point after the battle for Cadarn Edryd, however, they broke up.
  • Visenya Theras - Somehow, she manages to get along fairly well with the dragon. She doesn't seem to consider Visenya a friend, exactly, but she seems to enjoy her presence to some small degree.
  • Gelal'nagirutenlil - Contrary to her generally timid nature, she seems to be generally unintimidated by the incubus. She doesn't fail to recognize his nature or power; She just fails to be impressed by it most of the time. She isn't rude with him, though they've been at odds with one another before, but she does try to avoid interacting with him, as a general rule.
  • Gre'vyll Nelviar - Her opinion of this drow seems to be consistently negative.
  • Erin Black - Emma sees her as a friend, and gladly shares notes and scrolls with her. She's known Cass and Erin for about the same length of time, and seems about as fond of one as of the other, having even supposedly joined the Guardians through the two of them.
  • Julina Zhira - She used to get along very well with Julina, but following some manner of betrayal, her opinion of the woman suffered severely.
  • Rasha Suldanessellar - Emma considered Rasha a friend once, before the battle for Cadarn Edryd. She has since come to terms with the fact that their ideals would probably put them at odds with one another again in the future.

Possible Plot-Hooks

  • Emma doesn't remember the vast majority of the first ten to fifteen years of her life. A lot can happen in that much time.
  • Prior to coming to Sigil for the first time, Emma spent a year in the area around Curst as part of the Revolutionary League.
  • Her old fiendish mistress is supposedly dead, but given the nature of their connection, can she die while Emma lives?
