Rarlee is a kobold Divine Champion of Bahamut. A proud member of the Sign of One, and one of the founding members of the Company of the Unbroken Wheel (The Unbroken). She is the All-Watcher of the Eventide Clan of kobolds. She bears the Heartsung battleaxe Audax.

She is the bondmate of Fadra D'Rethi

Description

At the start of her journey, Rarlee would have looked like any other red-scaled kobold. However, since the fated day she found herself in Sigil she has grown into a fierce warrior. Where most of her kin would be thin and scrawny, Rarlee is built and toned. She does not shy away from showcasing her physical strength, and the golden plate she wears is fitted in such a way that keeps her protected but also allows for swift movement in battle. She wears the majority of her scars with pride, however on her wrists and ankles are worn patches of scale and skin that would indicate a significant portion of time in chains. She wears cloth wraps over these sections, and though she’s been offered healing for them in the past, she has stated she is not ready to rid herself of them yet.

Another notable difference is her entire left arm is scorched to a black charcoal. The ashy texture of the scales remains, however they are just as strong and healthy as the rest of her body. Her black arm is a badge of honor, as it is a sign of her strength of will when she reached into the fire god Kossuth’s realm and took a piece of Pure Fire. Now that she has been gifted divine powers, she uses her black arm to deliver the healing she can provide.

Her armor of gold plate is decorated with shades of dark red, and she often wears a Greater Cloak of Flame Bath that was gifted to her by a friend. Upon this cloak is pinned a broach that at first glance seems to be a gold and silver icon of Bahamut, but on close inspection the symbol of Tyr is included behind Bahamut’s visage. She also wears a badge to mark her as a Namer in the Sign of One, which she keeps polished and pinned to her belt.

Rarlee stands with a proud air about her, though it is often overshadowed by her natural energy and excitement. She is quick to make her thoughts known even when it can be to her social detriment. She is stalwart in her beliefs, and while she is open and tolerant of many ideas - she will not back down easily when her own are challenged. She has a fiery spirit, and while she may come off at first as innocent and childish, there is a keen mind that has become quite capable of reading into people and their reactions when it is of interest to her.

History

There are many hidden mines within the Sunset Mountains in Faerun. These mines are controlled entirely by the Cult of the Dragon for the purposes of mining out gems and precious metals to be used in their ritual casting. Kobold slaves are the manpower within, and have been for countless years. Rarlee was born here, and from the moment she was big enough to hold a pickaxe she'd been in chains. She spent the first 10 years of her life living in servitude.

What she learned was not done so easily, her kin would leave hastily scratches messages for each other in Draconic on the cave walls. She learned common, gradually by listening to her handlers speak to one another. Every day was a fight to survive, and she saw many of her fellow Kobolds beaten to death for often no reason other than the boredom of their wardens.

Eventually, after seeing another one of her kin felled and their broken and bloodied body continued to be savaged... Rarlee snapped. When her mind returned, she was standing over the body of one of her handlers. They were torn apart, ripped and shredded. Rarlee herself was covered in their blood, and her maw dripped with crimson. She fled - knowing she'd be killed if she didn't at least try. The commotion of finding one of their own dead seemed to have distracted most of the wardens, and Rarlee soon found herself at the mouth of the cave.

About to step out of the only place she'd ever known - a place of nightmares and pain that had filled her with such rage. She looked up at the sky as she felt grass beneath her clawed feet for the first time, and she saw the moon and stars. It was beautiful, and even though her heart still pounded, she felt peace. Short lived, however. Distracted by the twinkling lights in the sky, she had not seen the curling tree root that she tripped over. Instead of landing on grass however, when she lifted herself up she found herself in the middle of a dark and musty alleyway.

Oath

While not a paladin, Rarlee has a grand respect for those who have taken such Oaths. As part of the vigil she organized for a fallen paladin of Tyr, Rarlee wrote and took her own Oath.

I swear under the eyes of Tyr, and the guidance of Bahamut that I Rarlee pledge myself to performing Just deeds to the best of my capabilities. I shall trust my instincts and my heart to guide me in doing what is good - and fight against the fear that would try to sway this path. With my hands, head, and heart I commit myself to this Oath

Relationships

Fadra, Bondmate

Rarlee met Fadra within her first few hours of being in Sigil, and meeting of fate has had a significant impact on Rarlee's character as a whole. Rarlee had been entranced by the dance of the various colorful Ioun stones that many of those in the Fulcrum wore. Fadra saw this simple joy from the kobold, and gifted her one. This was the first act of kindness that Rarlee had ever experienced, and it shaped a great part of her path going forward. Looking up to Fadra for some time, Rarlee often found herself asking for her thoughts and advice. She had Fadra aid her in writing her Oath, and organizing the small vigil for the fallen paladin of Tyr. They fought together against many threats early on in Rarlee's adventures, and became close friends. Rarlee eventually found herself developing feelings for the drowess, though she was unable to place exactly what they were. After speaking to another trusted friend - Barxire - he directed Rarlee to speak to the Paladin of Love of her questions. Rarlee hid her intentions well throughout that conversation, and it wasn't until after several more events occurred that they were put into a room together and Rarlee admitted her truth. Since that night, the two have become a fearsome pairing and aiding in the other's individual goals.

Tahlia, Mentor

As a source of many of her abilities, Rarlee had relied on her anger and rage to bolster her body and further her strength. However, this led to many situations that caused more trouble than they were worth. Tahlia saw this in Rarlee and took her under her wing to teach the kobold how to meditate and better control her emotions. From testing her convictions by pitting her against her hatred of slavers, to training her within the Great Gymnasium itself, Tahlia has become a core part of Rarlee's growth.

Record of Deeds

The Atropal

Upon her first day in Sigil, Rarlee heard the large group she'd been speaking to talk of going on a mission. Wanting to help the nice people, she followed along determined to help. What she experienced that night was not something she'd soon forget. A dying Prime, being destroyed by an unborn God known as an Atropal had razed the land. Only a small town remained, and in an effort to buy them time to escape - they confronted the creature within an old broken temple. Rarlee did her best to aid in the ways she could, but the group had to flee from the Atropal's overwhelming power. Another planeswalker brought the remains of the Prime's moon down upon it as the rest escaped through a portal.

Only a few days passed where Rarlee spent a significant portion training herself as fast as she could. She knew it was only a matter of time before the Atropal returned, and even though it was well above her in power she was determined to fight for her newfound free life. Once more, the Atropal appeared this time in the Outlands. The group culled the undead that walked here, but had to flee yet again when the Atropal showed itself. Rarlee learned at this point that the monster could have become a God of goodness had it been properly born, and she was even more determined to be one of the warriors who ended this threat.

Rarlee's training continued, and during the time after the second encounter she found herself drawn to Bahamut, spending a significant portion of time studying his teachings and learning from her paladin friends. She spent several days in Excelsior as part of this - learning of justice and forgiveness. When word came that the Atropal had begun a siege on another Prime, Rarlee was once again ready for the call. She worked with the other planeswalkers to slay the undead it summoned, before drawing the Atropal itself out. Engaged in an intense battle, a ritual was performed by Barxire and Tasha - two users of the arcane who sought to rebirth the Atropal as a proper God. Rarlee heard them call out to their powers for aid in this fight and was inspired to call out to Bahamut as well. Whether or not she was heard that day is unknown, but the act filled Rarlee with such determination and vigor that she dealt the final blow to the Atropal - which the ritual had severed from undeath. The Atropal was born anew, named Aira. She became a new God of Peace and Protection, and thus the threat ended.

A Risen Paladin

During her training in the time after first encountering the Atropal, Rarlee became quite invested in slaying the undead that plagued the Lower Wards. Being informed by Barxire of a lab that often Necromancers did their experiments within, she set out to clear this infestation. While inside, Rarlee interrupted a ritual being cast to raise a paladin into undeath. The paladin called out to Tyr as such and retained the will he once had in life.

Blessing Rarlee and fighting by her side, they worked their way to the back of the laboratory. There they found another ritual in progress - though the outcome of it was not clear at first. They slew the necromancer involved, though in her dying breath she cackled and thanked them for completing the spell. A swirl of magic energy consumed the room, in the center of which came forth a Demi Lich. Acting quickly, Rarlee and the risen paladin fought the Lich, and slew the body. The paladin knew it was only a matter of time before it would return, and began to search and break any containers that could be the phylactrophy. He succeeded, and a screech could be heard as it was shattered. Not moments after, the paladin's undead body turned to dust. Celestial chain being the only thing remaining where the paladin once stood, Rarlee took up his mantle and swore she'd give him the vigil he deserved.

In the coming days, Rarlee spoke to several paladins of her experience in the laboratory, and Fadra offered to help Rarlee set up a vigil for the fallen warrior. Rarlee made a trek to Excelsior to speak to a fellow paladin of Tyr - Serina - in order to learn how to best respect the dead's faith. Gathering candles and incense, Rarlee planned to take her own Oath in memorial of the fallen paladin and what he had stood for. Fadra aided in Rarlee's writing of her Oath, and ran the vigil with her at an unmarked altar outside the Andorian forest. As the vigil concluded, the clouds opened to a gentle rain - which Rarlee took as a sign that her words and will had been received. Rarlee often visits the altar and offers gifts to it still.

Aiding the Firehair

While having a discussion in the Fulcrum together, Rarlee witnessed Fadra view some sort of vision. She was led to a small fire not far into the Outlands, and there she was tasked by an Archon sent by Sune, Fadra's Goddess with a task to prove herself. Rarlee was one of the group that traveled back to Toril to aid Fadra in saving a town known as Sundale from an unknown threat. The group discovered that the town's mine was using explosives to clear out the rock, which in turn was causing quakes in a cavern in the Upper Dark below. This had been disturbing a settlement of Drow, who were planning to soon investigate the cause. The group ensured that the miners ceased their use of explosives and closed the entrance to the Upper Dark, and upon returning back to the Outlands, Fadra was gifted further boons from her Goddess.

Karbara, Scion of Kerberos

Chant ran through Sigil after a merchant caravan had been attacked, and the cutters who had originally been tasked with slaying whatever was at fault also perished. Rarlee joined the group that set out to find whatever this creature was, and slay it. Upon arriving at the scene, the group was attacked by a monstrously large three headed dog, which they engaged with. After a grueling battle, the planeswalkers emerged victorious. Rarlee pulled one of the canine's claws from it's corpse, and keeps it on her person as a trophy.

The Heartsung Weapon, Audax

Not long after Rarlee's encounter in the necromancer lab, Rarlee had hope for a weapon that would aid her culling of the undead further. She had a Daystar that she used in her fight alongside the fallen paladin, and wished to find a smith who could tailor it to her desires. She met Rukk, a half-dragon Orog who happened to also be a talented blacksmith. She told Rarlee she could take the Daystar and create a weapon like no other, specifically tied to Rarlee. This process was one that had been practiced by her tribe for years, a gift from their Father, an Iron Dragon. Not long after, Rarlee met with Rukk and a small group to discuss the regents needed for this endeavor, as well as the history of Heartsung weapons. There were three things Rarlee was to collect; 10 chromatic dragon scales, a shard of light, and essence of pure fire.

The scales were first, and Rarlee was determined to gather them from a red, to match her own scales. She learned of a Red Wyrm that lived within a temple inside the Fire Plane, and alongside Fadra and Tahlia she ventured there with the goal of attempting to strike a deal with the dragon. After tense conversation beneath the gaze of the ancient wyrm, she was directed to return the following day to learn of her task. Upon doing so, Rarlee was to search out and find 2 blood heartstones and return them to the Red in exchange for the scales. Rarlee was able to locate these gems as being produced by a Vampire Lord, which she gathered a group to slay him with. Rarlee returned to the Wyrm with the stones, which she promptly swallowed before gifting Rarlee the agreed upon scales.

The shard of light had Rarlee puzzled for quite some time, as light could mean any number of things. Speaking to Rukk of her dilemma, she asked if the light could be metaphorical - or if the process of creating the weapon would reject it. During this conversation, Rarlee explained that she had found light in many things, but one such example was her bondmate Fadra. Had it not been for the glimmering of light, of kindness that Rarlee had been shown on her first day in Sigil, she could easily have gone down a much different path. This sparked an idea for Rarlee, who realized that the white ioun that had been given to her that faithful day was quite literally a shard of light. She'd carried it with her since the beginning, and it would be the ioun that represented the light to be imbued into the weapon.

Essence of pure fire was last to obtain, and Rarlee sought out Serina of the temple of Agni, a woman very familiar with fire. At her recommendation, they ended up traveling to the Fire Plane in an attempt to reach the domain of the fire God Kossuth. Accompanied by Tahlia, Serina led the way through the burning plane until they reached a wall of blistering fire that was far hotter than any blaze Rarlee had felt before. She had come with a fire-proof container, however the true test would be pulling the fire from the wall. Rarlee plunged her arm into it, and after an agonizing amount of time she was able to collect her goal. When she pulled herself from the fire however, her arm had been charred black. Returning to Sigil, Barxire aided Rarlee by regenerating her arm in an attempt to stop the burn from taking the arm entirely. This process healed her, however the arm remained black in coloration, a badge she now wears proudly.

All that was left was the forging itself, where Rukk, Fadra, Tahlia, and Rarlee worked in unison to birth the new weapon. The result was a beautifully dangerous battle axe, which Rarlee thusly named "Audax" or "Valiant" in Draconic. The axe itself is covered in draconic runes that are the Heartsong that was composed as part of the forging, which emit a red glow that beats in time with Rarlee's own heartbeat.
