Greetings, folks!

My name is Malgery Athiel, glad to get to know you!

First of all - I am surprised and excited to have an opportunity such as this - to get to write more about me and my family into the Sigil Daily magazine - the best paper for all dimensions! (tm)

Anyways, here we go!

Short story

My name is Malgery Athiel. I am a daughter of a hobbyist fishmonger and my artsy mom. For an odd reason, my mother did not display any physical traits of being partly of Avoral blood. Bringing this lovely set of gift and traits into our family line was the job of my grand-grandmother. She has been fond of conjuration, divine and plane studies. It’s mainly thanks to her, and the small fortune she blessed us with, that me and my parents are able to live in peace and safety, focusing on careers they want to pursue.

I, on the other hand - was a little surprise hatchling. No one suspected Avoral traits displayed so strongly, not after my grandmother had only part of her hair replaced with feathers. She had similar feather shade to mine, but with tiny speckles of chestnut brown.

So, out of hunger for knowledge, I decided to go and study otherworldly beings and sciences first-hand. Thankfully I got accepted into the Transcendent Order, so most of the books and lectures should be provided from the local funding.

You’ve already read a bit about me above. If you’d like to know more, keep reading, dearie!

As a young winged babygirl (with a feathery fluffed chest,) I was certainly a sight to locals and neighbours. After some confused presents of a bird food on my 0th birthday, they haven’t really been sticking their nose into privacy of our family. On the other hand, my dad is very social, so I guess he talked a lot about how things are going. My mom? She, although not displaying physical traits of her a bit wild celestial heritage, could be fierce and protective about our home. Unless you were invited, you weren’t going in. Her sight was unmatched, and her creativity and nimbleness of hands with clay and stone was incredible. She still had an easier time with larger tools than I do. I was never good at handling large tools, let alone doing something outstanding with them.

I got enchanted by crystals, and luckily enough, the tools I needed for my hobby were small enough, so I could handle them with no problems. That’s why I found myself in a forest meadow monk temple. The daily trainings in unarmed defence, agility trainings, minimalist lifestyle and nature all around - total bliss.

Except, I was still a bit too curious, a bit too creative, and a bit too easy to get excited for me to stay there for longer. I love the time I spent there, it has given me so much in terms of my personal, inner world. I guess it was during that time I firmly established my Alignment!

With a love of order and having my own mind, I felt really good. There have been people asking about my plumage color, of course - it’s more usual to display snowy or milky white plumage, since the devas and archons tend to visit other worlds more often than avorals, or other Guardinals.

So, albeit a bit unusual, the right people have always been quick to see through the differences and find the soul within. And the others? Well, it’s still their decision, and decisions have to be respected.

Family & heritage

Like other celestial descendants, my body took in only certain physical traits. I am glad i didn’t inherit avian feet! They look cute, but it’s nothing I’d like to walk with everyday. I have to admit - I have never been much of a flying show-off type. I use my wings mainly as a balance support, another way to show my overflow of emotions and, for gliding!

If you’ve ever hiked on top of a hill on a warm day, seen the beauty laid out right before you… only to softly glide, see the colorful map of the land below, accidentaly feaking out a few goats on a pasture (ehm, sorry ladies), you surely love gliding as well.

Preening is kind of fun, even though it could be called a time waster. And, molting every spring is the itchiest sensation you can ever get. Getting dressed with whole lot of pinfeathers hurting whenever the clothing tugs on them a little? Not my favourite thing. But hey, at least I get to wear open-back flowing dresses once in a while.

It’s not like I don’t use my wings when there’s no other way - I just love to exercise my creative thinking. And if there’s no way around, then, well, might as well use the extra ‘pair of hands’!

Sorry, my humour isn’t an award-winning one. Who knows, maybe I’ll be the one dropping the usual dad jokes. Don’t let me have children, please.

Goals and values

I don’t exactly have a checklist, even though I do. I let the life have its space to develop, with all its lovely variety and curious randomness.

I want to know. For example, why my granny had few tufts of feathers, my mom was left out, and I am basically a little pigeon. Would my child have a beak, be completely human, winged or born with grabby, avian feet? That’s the science I am looking for!

And while I travel through the Planes, I might as well check on my distant relatives in the celestial realms!

-

If you’re a druid or a shapeshifter, you’ve got an instant respect with me. And if you turn into anything I can pet, it’s doubled. (Any professional shapechangers, please write me a letter! I want to pet a dire tiger! And I get to comb you and all the things you’d like!)

Neutrality in those of celestial heritage tends to be a bit uncommon, and I got advised I might cover it a little in this article. It’s not like it matters that much, since everybody’s different, right? You can’t even expect two imp siblings to be the same.

The term itself is often misunderstood - or, people don’t exactly know what to think.

Neutrality, as the alignment constellation chart in the ‘Productive Clerics’ Guide to the Surviving Personalities’ shows, is located between good and evil alignment rows. Obsession with either one can be perceived as clouding one’s mind, disabling them to see multiple facets in everything.

Take a lawful good paladin, for example. If he is to meet and talk with a cruel, oppressive mayor - he might be too blinded by their difference to see anything past the image in his mind.

Neutrality however, if you choose so, allows you to acknowledge the mayors’ breathtaking miniature art collection, or his incredible talent with mandoline. None of these change what wrongs he did, he will be judged anyways. But, the nice things can still be appreciated and discussed in a more-less friendly manner, with no bad feelings.

The beauty of being lawful and neutral is, that you have the guidelines (law, morals), and at the same time a bit of a distance to decide and observe on your own. And then decide on a chosen approach. Inherent bird-like curiosity makes it even stronger.

Me, personally? I believe in being nice to people. It feels great! Maybe even evil characters are sometimes nice to others. Maybe they have a handful of friends they hang out with! Once I’ve heard a saying, that there’s no such feeling comparable to “being loved by someone who hates everyone.” So maybe an evil lich like Vecna, for example, sometimes turned into a fluffy, angry bunny with his closest friends! It’s an adorable scene to imagine; Vecna with his friends play Dragonchess (quite popular on Faerun), and Vecna keeps reviving his ‘dead’ figures, and pouts a little as he’s losing against his mortal friend, Aaron. How do lichs eat snacks? Do you think they’ve been teasing Vecna with oven-baked pretzels, until he started chasing after them with summoned Bigby’s Hand?

---

If I would take on a challenge and try to get to know a chaotic evil person? Sure I would! If nothing, it brings a new experience - and probably a few laughs along the way.

You don’t have to agree with others 100% of the time, as long you respect each others’ choices and/or discuss matters that are critical to your further friendship. No chart can tell you about people’s dreams, goals and fantasies. Only a time spent with them.

Thank you for reading, and have a lovely day!
